Course Description:
The course builds around two main components:
（1） Event study: An examination of how accounting information interacts with the capital market.
（2） Earnings Management: An application of how accounting theory can be used to detect errors in financial reporting.
The course emphasizes the development of oral and written communication skills; the ability to locate and use financial accounting information; the skill to process financial information in Excel, and an understanding of the results and implications of accounting research.
The course will teach students how to use Compustat (a database of 10-K and 10-Q filings) and CSRP (a database of stock prices) in WRDS (Wharton Research Data Services). The course will also teach students how to process financial information using advanced features in Excel. The objective is to provide students a hands-on experience in applying accounting theory into practical use.

Nan Zhou博士现任State University of New York at Binghamton商学院会计学终身副教授及会计学博士项目负责人. 宾汉顿是纽约州立大学系统内四个可授博士学位的大学中心之一. 宾汉顿商学院本科项目在有影响力的彭博商业周刊(Bloomberg Business Week)的全美商学院最新排名榜中名列第３５位. 周南博士是国际审计期刊(International Journal of Auditing)现任编委. 他于2000年在美国明尼苏达大学获会计学博士学位; 于1993在美国南伊利诺大学获工商管理硕士学位; 于1989在北京清华大学获学士学位. 他曾在纽约大学斯特恩商学院, 香港科技大学, 体育外围平台APP和厦门大学担任访问学者或客座教授. 他的研究发表在Journal of Accounting Research, Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting, Auditing and Finance, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, and Economics Letters等会计学权威及高质量学术期刊. 据谷歌学者(Google Scholar)统计，他的论文迄今已被引用３７７次. 他经常为本科生，硕士生，博士生及经理班讲授各类会计课程. 他于2007年在中国教育部和国家自然科学基金会在厦门大学举办的暑期学校为全国七十多所高校的博士生和青年教师讲授会计研究; 他于2010年在普华永道(国际四大会计师事务所之一)全球总部为普华永道在职员工讲授培训课程. 他于2005至2006被收录于美国教师名人录(Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers)第１０版; 他于2007至2009被收录于美国名人录(Who’s Who in America) 第61, 62和63版. 他的研究获得了2011年美国普华永道会计师事务所探索科研基金(PwC INQuiries Grant)的资助.
