Nowhere are low emission operations more important than in logistics to remote pristine locations such as within the Arctic Circle. Logistics to remote locations posts traditional challenges including highly seasonal variability, limited options resulting in high transportation costs, and the much more contemporary aspect of low carbon footprint requirements. This study focuses on the long term economic assessment of a large research site in Greenland operated by NSF with outsourced logistics operations. We study the strategic supply chain design problem as a bi-objective optimization problem, where cost and carbon footprint must be controlled.
The overall model is based on the time-spaced network and a multi-commodity mathematical programming formulation. By using goal programming techniques of first minimizing cost and then emissions subject to a tolerable cost increase, we show how to design a cost and environmentally effective logistics network and provide guidance to future feasibility of operating the site. In order to solve the long-run model, an approximate dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm is developed. Last, we propose a possibly new framework for solving bi-objective optimization problems under the ADP framework.

附：主讲人简介
Yue Geng is currently a PhD candidate with Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences Department, Northwestern University. He obtained his bachelor degree with honor from Zhejiang University in 2003, majored in electrical engineering. He also got a master of philosophy degree in industrial engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His current research interests include large scale optimization and stochastic optimization, with applications in supply chain management and energy. He has published in European Journal of Operational Research and has given academic talks in INFORMS conferences and IEEE conference. He has received Walter. P. Murphy fellowship and transportation fellowship from Northwestern University and is a recipient of CII scholarship from Containerization and Intermodal Institute of America.
