Abstract:
In an unbalanced cooperative game whose core is empty, the grand coalition is not sustainable. We consider the case where an outside third party might be interested in stable functioning of the grand coalition since it leads to the optimal social welfare.
We investigate several instruments for the outside third party to sustain the stability of the grand coalitions for unbalanced cooperative games: (1) in the instrument of subsidizing, we aim to maximize the total shared cost for all the game players; (2) in the instrument of simultaneously subsidizing and penalizing, we analyze the joint effects of subsidy and penalty on the collaboration of the agents; (3) in the instrument of refining game structure, we propose a new approach to altering the coalitional cost such that the resulting game is balanced. Our models and algorithms are generic for a class of cooperative games, and we also show the implementation for specific games arising from practical applications.
