Examining the Effects of Software Insourcing and Outsourcing on Productivity: The Influence of Software Maturity

摘 要:
Should firms insource or outsource their IT functions? Only a few studies have directly compared the performance of IT insourcing and IT outsourcing, and the findings are not conclusive. This study examines how software insourcing and outsourcing impact industry productivity and suggests that the software maturity of an industry has an influential role in such impacts. Specifically, we propose that in software-growing industries where there are many new software innovations, software insourcing contributes more to productivity than software outsourcing. In software-mature industries with few new software innovations, however, software outsourcing contributes more to productivity than software insourcing. In addition, we further suggest that the software maturity of an industry also affects the directions of complementarities between IT insourcing and IT outsourcing. The analyses based on a large-scale panel dataset from the US economy support our main hypotheses.
