摘要:

This study explores the role of stress related hormones in gender difference in willingness to compete. In Experiment 1, we measure hormonal response of cortisol, testosterone, estradiol, and progesterone prior to the choice of willingness to compete. We find that the response of progesterone accounts for a large portion of the observed gender difference in the competitiveness. In Experiment 2, we introduce a rest period to cool down potential hormonal influence. We observe a significant narrower gender difference in competitiveness in the treatment condition with the rest period, compared to the control condition without the rest period. Our study suggests that the observed gender gap in competitiveness is partially driven by hormonal response and can be cooled down in a simple manner.
